Tijuana police said a group of armed men ambushed Cardenas, 25, on the Playas de Rosarito-Tijuana road in an attempt to kidnap the Corridos Tumbados singer, according to Punto Norte.
Cardenas managed to escape his kidnappers' grasp by jumping out of the vehicle the suspects had placed him in.
The gunmen fired multiple shots at Cardenas, who was found dead with his wrists handcuffed, the outlet reported.
Photos from the scene obtained by Punto Norte showed the musician lying beside an orange Renault Stepway van.
Cardenas' record label, Street Mob Records, founded by renowned Mexican artist Jesús Ortiz Paz of the group Fuerza Regida, confirmed his death in a statement.
"On behalf of Street Mob Records, we deeply regret the passing of our colleague and brother Chuy Montana," the statement posted on Instagram read.
"We stand in solidarity with his family during this time of grief. We kindly request understanding and respect from the media at this difficult moment."
Before Ortiz Paz's Street Mob Records signed him, Cardenas was popular on social media for singing and playing his guitar between vehicles waiting in line to cross back into the United States via the San Ysidro, Tijuana, side of the border in Mexico.
A viral video on social media showed the moment Cardenas and another fellow guitars ran into Ortiz Paz, who was seated in the back seat of a car waiting in line to cross back into the US.
Cardenas is seen singing to Ortiz Paz, who then asks the Tijuana native in the video if he wrote the song.
Ortiz Paz pulls out a piece of paper and signs Cardenas to his Street Mob Records, saying, "Sign here only. It's all set; you're signed to the company. They're going to send you a message. Go home, that's it."
Cardenas eventually blew up following the release of his singles Porte de Scarface and Ramos Buchones.
He was featured in the single Polvos de Chanel from Fuerza Regida's latest album, Pa las Baby's y Belikeada.
Ortiz Paz mourned Cardenas' death sharing a pair of videos of the two singing in what appeared to be private events.
In one of the videos, shared on Ortiz Paz's Instagram Stories, Cardenas is seen sitting on a sofa playing the guitar while the Fuerza Regida frontman is rapping.
The second video, recorded in a lavish backyard, shows Cardenas and Ortiz Paz rapping together.
Coles shopper shares little-known hack to get free items with your online order – but there's a catch | 3E8FMQ2 | 2024-04-30 05:08:01
A COLES customer has left fellow shoppers stunned after revealing a very simple loophole to receive free ice cream.
The anonymous shopper told of a little known trick that he and his girlfriend have been using to take advantage of a Coles Online policy.

By opting in to receive substitutes when making a home delivery order, the couple have been able to exploit the loophole.
That's because the Australian-based chain offer their alternative product for free if it doesn't suit the demands of the customer.
"When you order something and it isn't available, they send you an alternative.
"But if you say you're not happy with the alternative they choose for you, you get the item for free."
In order to ensure they get a free alternative each time, the shopper revealed his sneaky trick of choosing something that is guaranteed to be out of stock.
"Recently my girlfriend and I have found a Japanese ice cream which is consistently not available in Australia," he continued.
"But we order it and get sent an alternative, which we say we're not happy with.
"We're now receiving a free tub of ice cream every week."
However, as with most things that appear too good to be true – there's a catch.
While Coles does give credits to shoppers who are unhappy with their substitutes, the supermarket may refuse to do this for "repeat offenders".
According to 7news.com.au, if a customer has repeatedly had a credit applied for a substitute issue within the last three months, a Coles Online agent may prevent any further credits being applied.
Nonetheless, a Coles spokesperson said that the supermarket is happy to provide substitutes to online customers.
"Coles Online encourages customers opt in to receive substitutions so we can replace out of stock items with similar products for their convenience," the spokesperson said.
"If you have chosen to allow substitutions, we'll choose a similar item that is either a different size of the same product or a different brand."
"If we substitute any item you'll be charged the lower of the original or the substitute price. When an item is out of stock you won't be charged for that item."
Following the shopper's reveal, however, social media users were stunned by the hack.
Customers are now complaining that too many stores are lowering their level of service and are making the case that they shouldn't have to scan and bag their own groceries.

The Brit socialite was found at the pool area of the hotel, where she was pronounced dead.
Isabelle's death has been confirmed as a suicide by LA County coroners – and it's understood she did not leave a note behind.
Her distraught dad, Sir Henry Lawrence, 7th Baronet of Lucknow, told The Sun of his daughter's death: "I have absolutely no idea why this happened or what was troubling her. It is so awful."
He added: "I was last in contact with her a couple of weeks ago."
Sources told TMZ the 39-year-old had fallen from a high floor.
Isabelle was the daughter of Sir Lawrence, and his ex-wife Penelope Nunan.
She was raised in the Cotswolds alongside her older brother Christopher Lawrence.
During her childhood, she attended the private King Edward's School and Prior Park College in Bath.
Her parents divorced after 14 years together in 1993.
After she finished school, she addressed the UN and The World Bank and was also appointed by the former British prime minister, David Cameron, to serve as a tech adviser.
Isabelle was also known for her love of the nightlife.
Her old social media posts show her moonlighting as a DJ and enjoying events around London.
She moved to California where she worked as a consultant and producer.
The mum was a member of The UCLA Center of Storytellers and Scholars Advisory Board.
She got married to Bradley Thomas in 2018.
The couple shares twin daughters, Poppy and Grace, while Isabelle is also a step mum to her husband's older children Lucy and Charlie.
The two were last pictured together on January 13 at the 2024 BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills.
The young socialite made many famous friends throughout her DJ career including Amy Winehouse, James Blake, and Jameela Jamil.
In an Instagram post, fellow Brit Jamil, who is in a relationship with Blake, said she lost a friend very suddenly.
"My heart is completely and utterly broken and I don't think I will ever recover," she wrote.
"I missed the chance to tell her I loved her. And hold her one last time."
The tragic news comes after Bradley Thomas' Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Bradley has been one of the producers behind a number of hit films including There's Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber.

Emergency services raced to the scene on Cleveland Street in Wahroonga at 2pm after receiving a report about the trapped child.
Firefighters on the ground attempted to rescue the boy but he died on the spot.
The school authorities confirmed the child's tragic death in a public statement – and said the school premises would remain closed for the foreseeable future.
They said: "St Lucy's School is very sad to confirm the tragic death of one of our students this afternoon.
"We are cooperating with the investigating police and are not able to make any further statement today.
"The school will be closed to students until further notice.
"We ask for privacy and space for our staff and families to grieve at this difficult time as we remember our beautiful student."
The Sydney cops have now set up a crime scene around the school for the disabled and are in motion to recover the child's body.
A NSW Police spokesperson said an independent report will be prepared for the coroner.
St. Lucy is a private Catholic Dominican School focusing on kids with distinguished disabilities.
It started as a primary school before expanding its operations to include secondary education for the students in 2019.
Currently, the institution caters to around 230 students from kindergarten to year 12.

Natalie Joy is not here for the shade about her wedding day look.
"Some of y'all are actually being ridiculous with these comments," Joy, 25, wrote via her Instagram Story on Monday, April 29. "Yes I'm breastfeeding so as the night went on my boobs got bigger."
Joy shared she was "not in pain" from her dress, which had a corset bodice. Since she is currently breastfeeding her newborn daughter, River Rose, Joy explained that her breasts got "massive" throughout the night. (Joy and her husband, Nick Viall, welcomed their little girl in February.)
"I was surrounded by people I consider family and literal family. Nobody made it weird so y'all don't make it weird," Joy wrote on Monday. "Anyways continuing on with good vibes and wishing y'all the best !!!"
Joy also shared several snaps of her wedding day outfits, including the gown she walked down the aisle in and a second dress for the reception. The party look was a strapless corset gown with lace details.
"Another custom @shop_cinq moment that made me feel SO sexy!!" she wrote via Instagram on Monday alongside snaps from the celebration. "As soon as we hit the dance floor we didn't leave it until almost 2am, we had confetti cannons, cold sparklers, a champagne tower, 'At Last' sung by Mrs. Kim Polote who is not only a family friend but someone who spent a lot of time with my grandmother before she passed so having her sing felt like my grandmother was with us. just wait for the video footage it was insane. I wanna relive this night over and over again

Phaedra Parks Reveals If She Could See Herself Marrying Again After Divorce | NR63900 | 2024-04-30 03:08:01
Phaedra Parks Reveals If She Could See Herself Marrying Again After DivorcePhaedra Parks.Gonzalo Marroquin/for BHRC
Phaedra Parks is having fun in the dating world – but isn't too keen on the idea of getting married again after her divorce from ex-husband Apollo Nida.
"It's not important to me, to be honest," the Real Housewives of Atlanta alum, 50, exclusively told Us Weekly while attending the Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center's West Hollywood grand opening on Thursday, April 25. "It's really not because I have two wonderful children. I don't want to have any more children, and I don't want to have to give anybody any money in a divorce settlement. I want to keep all my money for my kids."
Parks was married to Nida, 45, from 2009 to 2017 and the twosome share sons Ayden, 13, and Dylan, 10.
While marriage doesn't seem to be in the cards for Parks, she shared that she is dating someone casually.
"I mean, I don't know how serious it is," she told Us, adding that she likes being single because she works a lot. "It's hard to sometimes maintain relationships and I think when I date guys sometimes they want more from me than I can actually commit to, if that makes sense."
Parks, who starred on RHOA from 2010 to 2017 and currently appears on Married to Medicine, did note that dating is more difficult after appearing on reality shows.
"They know more about you than you know about them," she explained. "So that definitely makes it a little more interesting. But at the end of the day, I have a good spirit of discernment so I can make better choices than what I've made in the past. I believe in dating, I believe in having a good time."

Although Parks does love having fun dating, she is also focused on being a mom to her two sons – and is proud of how they've turned out so far.
"People tell me that even when I'm not around, my children are very mannerable. They always say their prayers before dinner. And they're just really loving children," she gushed. "They're really sensitive to people because I try to teach them that you really need to not only be concerned about yourself but be concerned about your community. Be concerned about people that are less fortunate than you. So I really try to teach them to be good human beings."
Motherhood isn't always easy, however, and Parks noted that there are challenges that come along with being a working mom.
"Some people think it's all about money, but it's really about time," she said. "Money will never buy you peace, money can't buy you love. … I think it's all about giving your kids the right amount of time that they know that there is that commitment as a parent."
As she continues to balance her busy schedule with being a mom of two, Parks still attempts to make time for herself by doing self-care rituals.
"I'm a reiki healer. I love my reiki. I love a massage. … But anything with my children, swimming, mediation, sound therapy," she gushed, adding that she supports whatever self-care people choose to do. That includes Botox and other facial revitalization treatments, which are offered at the Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center's new West Hollywood location.
"For someone like me that's allergic to Novocaine, I can't do a lot of things, but I think when you feel good on the inside and you're happy with how you look, you just exude a better energy," she added.
