Five years ago, at the age of just 39, I was given the devastating news that I had bowel cancer. Since then I've undergone surgery six times – three major, life-saving operations, and three more to sort out post-surgical complications. At the moment, the outlook is positive and I'm currently clear of cancer. I'd given birth to three children, now aged 16, 12 and nine, by caesarean section. I'd had an operation for an ectopic pregnancy – when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes – aged 29.
